    About the name "Buckeye" Beans

Located on the quiet waters of the Little Spokane River, just a stone’s throw away from Spokane, Washington, the mill town of Buckeye was once a bustling community of three hundred residents. Lumber was cut from the surrounding pine and tamarack forests and milled at the Buckeye Lumber Company. Boxes made from first grade lumber were shipped from the Buckeye Box Factory to various parts of the United States via the Spokane Falls and Northern Railroads. Many local commercial apple growers shipped their fruit in Buckeye boxes. By 1912, the mill was closed and most of the townsfolk had moved on. The Buckeye Beans company was founded just downstream from this sleepy little town and was inspired to create genuine products that reflect the "simpler" way of life." Hearty soups on the back burner and beans baking in the oven provide a flavor of days gone by.

I have been making my own soups and freezing them for years, due to all the unpronouncible ingredients such as MSG and others in prepared soups. I read the label on this soup mix and decided to purchase for a gift basket, then after reading about the product, I tried it, hoping for the best. The best thing is that it really tastes homemade. This is a winner with 1/2 lb of lean ground sirloin, but I can imagine venison as well. I add sliced carrots and chopped celery. Everyone who has shared this at our table has thoroughly enjoyed it. I've also given this as gifts in Christmas baskets with other homemade goods. We now have the mixes in our freezer that I can make up anytime.

Received this as part of a gift of three kinds. It is my hubbie's fave and my second fave so far. We used stew meat with fat trimmed off and cooked longer (3 hrs) for greater meat tenderness. We also used half Beef Broth for the fluid. It was just wonderful and lasted 5 meals for us!

I purchased the package at TJ Maxx on a whim and I'm so glad I did. It is very tasty and hearty. It cooks in an hour which in my opinion is fast for a good homemade tasting soup. I used ground turkey instead of ground beef as suggested and it was wonderful. Highly recommend!

I stumbled upon Beefed Up Barley Soup in an out-of-town boutique market and took a chance and bought two boxes. Wow!! What a hit it was with my family! I made my second batch for a church dinner that I wasn't able to personally attend. The next day I was bombarded with requests for "my" soup recipe. I couldn't tell a lie, and my secret was out. I wasn't able to find this product nearby, so I visited the website printed on the box. Little did I know I would find several more soup flavors. Needless to say, I tried them all. There isn't one that I've made that hasn't been inhaled and thoroughly enjoyed. I only wish I knew the secret ingredients in the herb packets. The corn bread mix that is offered is so far superior to ones I've tried that are sold in local grocery stores. A proverbial tip of the hat to Seattle Gourmet for offering healthy, great-tasting products!

This is THE BEST packaged soup I have ever purchased!!!!! I also found it at Ross. I used hamburger and since the only canned tomatoes I had on hand was Fire Roasted diced, I added one can and then a can of black beans. A great soup on a cold weekend in Fort Worth with solid ice covering the streets and every reason is stay safe and cozy inside with delicious soup. Someone put together an excellent spice package - will definitely purchase this again

I used the soup mix with small cubed venison pieces and it was just great.Browned the venison in a few pieces of bacon because the venison is very lean. Then I added the onions and some diced celery to cook until transparent as per directions. The end result was just terrific.

When I made this soup, I used cubes of beef that I cut up fairly small. An option is to use hamburg, but that didn't sound palitable to me. Not being much of a beef eater, I only made this soup once. The soup was very good, but I prefer chicken to beef.

I found this soup in a discount store and was very sceptical. I didn't really know what barley was. I made it and I absolutely loved it. I added a little sugar and I could have eaten half the pot. I will definitely have it again.

Made this for dinner last evening and it was delightful! We found it in a discount store, but are pleased to know we can purchase it online. Like below, we made it using beef broth and water. Very hardy, and just the right touch of spices without burning your mouth. Anxious to purchase some new mixes before the hard winter months hit Michigan. This might be one of my new pantry staples!

Like many on here, I first found this soup at Ross Dress For Less. I now check the store every time I am in, just in case I can buy a box or two :) This is my favorite soup mix! I usually make the soup in my crock pot. We use ground turkey/chicken instead of beef, usually add some chopped celery to the onion as it's sautéing, and sometimes even add some sliced kielbasa. The seasoning packet adds a really good flavor with just enough spice to zest it up, but not too much for those who would rather not have their tongues on fire while they eat (namely, me!). The barely/lentil combination creates a rather filling meal. With a side of cornbread, this is a perfect easy fix for dinner!

A friend made this soup and shared some with us. We loved it. I had to know her recipe and was surprised when she showed me the box of Beefed Up Barley soup mix. She shared a box of it with me and we made it last night. We actually used ground venison instead of beef and then used reduced sodium beef stock in place of the water. It was fantastic.

My friend actually found this soup mix at a discount store so I am off in search of more today. But if I don't find it I am glad to know I can order online anytime. Anxious to try a few other flavors too!

By all means, please ignore the name. This soup is so scrumptious. I'm not a meat eater so I decided to add veggies(carrot, celery & potatoe). Best idea ever! I originally purchased 2 boxes(veggie bean & beefed up barley) from Ross on a whim. The veggie bean was for myself & beefed up barley was for my fiance. Needless to say beefed up barley was so superb he never asked about the meat. Great texture with amazing flavor. Definitely a winner.

I went to the store the next day and cleaned them out. I now buy them online. They are filling, healthy and low in salt but still taste great.

I was a huge fan of Buckeye Beans & Herbs back in the 80s when they had a full product line including fun shaped pasta and more soups. Chicken 'N Thyme was the first one I had tried and I loved. My favorites were always Chicken 'N Thyme, Great Leapin' Lentils, Beefed-Up Barley, and Barley Burgoo (which unfortunately Seattle Gourmet Foods isn't producing - PLEASE RECONSIDER IF POSSIBLE!).

I was so upset when the line was sold off in 1997 and then completely discontinued as the company that bought it went bankrupt in 1999.

I stumbled across my 3 favorites, plus the Pea Soup (favorite of my Mom's) in the Christmas Tree shop and was thrilled!

You can't go wrong with these soups and I always have to make double batches when I make them.

This one always got an eyebrow raise from friends and family and folks didn't think they would like it. They were always wrong and wanted more. I gave a box to a friend recently and they tried it with cubed beef (I always make it with ground beef) and they said it was fantastic.

It tastes a little like a chili but not quite. It is fantastic on a cold day when you need something a little hearty and spicey. Serve with the cornbread, rolls or a nice chunk of bread.

We found this completely by accident and bought it on a whim. What a surprise it turned out to be! We cooked it this morning, following instructions precisely. Turned it off and let it rest in the pot until time to reheat for dinner. Superb!! The only change we made was to sprinkle each bowl with lime juice when serving.

We will look for this product again.
